| General Information: | Póvoa de Varzim is located 21M south of Viana do Castelo. The south facing entrance of the harbour is protected by an outer breakwater, north breakwater heading SSW, with red flashes light and siren. The other breakwater, south breakwater heads NNW, and has a long flashes green light. Although the harbour is well protected from northwest, the entrance might be rough if the swell is heavy; even with moderate swell, braking water is to be expected off the breakwater end. The north coast has offshore dangers and a 2M clearance should be given. The south coast is sandy with rocks; as it also has offshore dangers; navigation should keep outside the 20m line. A wire fence surrounds the port. |
| Entrance: | When approaching from the north, give a good clearance to the end of the north breakwater and associated turbulence that extends up to 30m off to the south. The entrance should be made heading NNE towards the southern breakwater, swinging to N, once sheltered by the northern breakwater. Once cleared from the head of the southern breakwater, swing to starboard giving a 50m clearance and leaving the small green buoys well to starboard. The entrance is about 3,5m chart datum. |
